(2-20-18) – If you are a Midwest Athletic Conference or Marion Local boys basketball fan you most likely have a ‘puzzled’ look on your face when you look at this week’s AP State Boys High School Basketball Final Rankings. The Flyers are not ranked this week.

The Flyers enter the last week of the season undefeated in the MAC (8-0), with one conference game remaining with Coldwater, who did beat them earlier in the year. When you also consider that they knocked off Versailles 52-47 last week in a key MAC match-up and knocked the Tigers out of the running for the conference title. The Flyers also include impressive wins over St. Henry (#5 in D IV this week) and Minster.

Versailles, who just lost three in a row, still remains at #6 in the D III poll this week, including that loss to Marion Local. In the meantime the Flyers who had 22 points last week in the DIV poll and were just one point away from the entering the Top 10, are are not listed (teams must have at least 12 points) at all this week.

Now here comes some added insight, Marion Local has four losses on the season, their last loss was to Ft. Loramie (20-2)  47-45, the Redskins are ranked #4 this week in D IV. But his week two teams in the D IV Top 10  #8 Berlin Hiland has five losses. But this next one may make your head spin! Cornerstone Christian, who is 13-7,  moved up a spot to #9 which included three first place votes (see comments below).

The Flyers really do deserve a lot more respect than what they have received this season.  If you ask the majority of coaches they don’t concern themselves to much with the results of the weekly poll.

A little free advice to those who vote on the rankings, consider in the future doing a little more research before casting your ballots. Only 17 sportswriters voted on this week’s Top 10 in the entire state of Ohio.

Marion Local will now have to show those voters during the tournament that they might have been mistaken about the Flyers.

#1’s This Week –

  • D I – Solon (20-0)
  • D II – Wauseon (21-0)
  • D III – Harvest Prep (22-0)
  • D IV – Mansfield St. Peter’s

Interesting sideline

Cornerstone Christian is located in Wiilloughby and they play a lot of the D I basketball powers (#1 Solon, Mentor, Garfield Heights, etc) in Ohio. They played in the Adidas Holiday Slam in Orlando, Florida and went 2-1.  According to the OHSAA web site the Patriots have 44 boys, competitive balance will not be an issue for them.
