(5-22-18) Last season Don Goodes was a Junior at Greenbrier Christian Academy in Chesapeake Virginia and was named to the TCIS All Conference team. This season his family relocated to Wapakoneta for his Senior season…he made it one to remember as he helped the Redskins to a second consecutive Western Buckeye League Championship and a #1 ranking in D II. His outstanding season is why Goodes was named the SSN All Auglaize County Player of the Year.
So how does Goodes end up at Wapakoneta? As a child in a military family he has lived around the world. During his stay in Japan he had the opportunity to play baseball in Okinawa, Japan. As a 12 year old American, who didn’t speak any Japanese at the time, he played on a I5 year old Japanese travel baseball team.
This is where you might see a comparison to the film ‘The Karate Kid’, Goodes’ coach Kishaba-san, took a chance on him. He was able to learn the basics from Kishaba-san and he drilled them into him 7 days a week for two straight years. That came to an end when Kishaba-san passed away during a baseball practice, Goodes and his Mom found him at the batting cage that day. After that tragic day he did not miss any practices, but buckled down even more, becoming more focused on his baseball dream. Kishaba-san’s dedication to Goode has paid off.
Wapakoneta Head Baseball Coach Jason Brandt:
Don Goodes has been a great addition to the Redskin Baseball Family. Don is the best hitter that I have ever seen in my 20 plus years of coaching as well as playing in college. His strong desire to get better on a daily basis is what sets him apart from most players. He constantly takes extra batting practice whether its from another player, coach or his father. This is the kind of dedication you want to see from your players.
Don has committed to play college baseball next year at Virginia Military Institute. His addition to the program has been great. What he brought to the team as well as what we had returning has really set us apart from other teams we have had. Don was recently selected as WBL and District Co-Player of the year with Manny Vorhees.
Goodes is joined on the team by four of his teammates, Manny Vorhees (Ohio Domincan), Joel Roediger (Ohio Domincan), Mitch Apple and Gage Schenk.
Four Minster Wildcats join the team, Austin Brown, Alex Lehmkuhl, Jared Huelsman and Isaac Schmiesing.
Adding four members to the team from New Bremen include, Ryan Bertke, Luke Vonderhaar, Grant Selby and Justin Tenkman.
Rounding out the team is Waynesfield-Goshen’s Jaden Maxwell and St. Marys’ Austin Wilker.
