(3-25-20) Last week Celina Middle School Principal Ann (Sutton) Esselstein passed away after a long and hard fought battle with cancer.
Her love for her students and her job was seen by many through her leadership and ability to communicate with students and staff.
The 1985 Parkway graduate did the same thing on the basketball court for the Panthers.
The 1985 Panthers finished the season with a 17-6 record, 6-3 in the MAC and won a Sectional title. Parkway would lose in the District semifinal game to Upper Scioto Valley 42-39.
Esselstein, who was a Senior, was the fiery point guard that led her team in assists, no surprise. This team was loaded with talent…Junior twins Teri (still the career rebound leader at Parkway) and Tracy Gaerke, Junior Joy Gamble and Senior Norwegian foreign exchange student Anne Simonsen.
Esselstein played with a passion, much like her Coach Tod Scarpella coached, she ran the floor like a General. Those skills would follow her during her education career.
The Panthers girls basketball program would go on to a 20 win season the next year (1986), including a 7-2 MAC record. They would also pick up another Sectional title and a District title.
The Panthers lost in the Class A Regional semifinal game to Antwerp 50-47, Antwerp would go on to win the Regional title and advance to state, where they lost to eventual State Champion Bethel 58-55 in the state semifinal game.
