1978 Class A Regional Final at Bowling Green – Ottoville vs Marion Local
(3-26-20) During this time of ‘Stay at Home’ due to the cornoavirus, it seems it is a good time to look at the past highlights of high school sports. The above You Tube video is the 1978 Class A Regional Final at Bowling Green when Ottoville beat Marion Local 57-48. Not many pre-internet high school sports videos are available online for this period of time, so this a fune one to watch.
In 1978 there were still three classes, AAA, AA and A. There was no 3 point FGs or alternate possession after a tie-up in 1978.
The Flyers advanced to the Regional Final beating Arcadia 69-59, while the Big Green advanced with a 57-44 win over Stryker.
The Flyers 1978 team included Gary Jones, who during his career became the 11th all-time leading scorer in MAC History with 1,365 points. Jones would go on to become the AD and head basketball coach at New Bremen. His teammate Craig Greisdorn would later follow in his footsteps and lead the Cardinals as head basketball coach.

Head Coach Irv Besecker, a Franklin Monroe graduate, had quite a run at Marion Local, including leading the Flyers’ and the Midwest Athletic Conference to their 1st ever State title in 1975. 1978 would be his last season as the head coach. After he left he was replaced by some assistant coach you might have heard of…Jack Albers, who would coach the Flyers for the next 18 years and left winning 290 games.
