(4-14-20) The Union City (Indiana) Athletic Department made a classy move in a note to spring sport athletes yesterday.
Earlier this month Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb announced that all state schools would remain closed for the remainder of this school year due to the pandemic. After that announcement the IHSAA announced it had cancelled all spring sports.
This does not take away all the disappointment, but it is a wonderful gesture.
SPRING SPORT LETTERS WILL BE AWARDED
April 13, 2020 Union City—The Union City Athletic Department has decided that all high school athletes that had started in a spring sport and would have been on a spring sport roster will be awarded a UC VARSITY LETTER. These letter winners also had to be eligible at the end of the 3rd nine weeks which would have allowed them to compete in spring sports.
Due to the circumstances we find ourselves in, it is beyond our athletes’ control that they lost the opportunity to compete in their sport and represent Union City. They should not be penalized for this situation and we are excited to be able to award them their letters.
We plan to hand out spring awards in late May which will include your Letters for spring sports and Tri-Athlete Tee Shirts. Not sure how the awards program is going to look like, but we will have it figured out and a plan announced later in May.
We were looking forward to watching you compete this spring and we know you would have represented Union City with pride and enthusiasm on the track, court and field of play. Thank You Indian athletes and coaches.
Make sure you are all doing your e-learning so you are ready to participate for the fall season, stay safe and be healthy.
