(4-14-20) At this week’s Jay School Board meeting Jerry Bomholt was approved as the next Jay County High School boys basketball coach. For Bomholt it is his second time in charge of the Patriots’ program. His first time around started in 1981 and during his stay he had a 57-39 record.
Bomholt will return to coach his 40th year and returns with a career record of 549-344, which is ninth among active Indiana coaches and 23rd all time for career victories.
Since leaving Jay County he has coached at Princeton, twice at Southwestern (Hanover), Shawe Memorial and Franklin.
Bomholt replaces Chris Krieg, who recently resigned, after the Patriots finished 7-16 last season, its first losing season since 2001.
Bomholt resigned during this season as Southwestern’s coach with two games remaining in the season. A Madison Courier article says Bomholt’s resignation came following concerns from players in the locker room at the end of a late season game.
Jay County AD Steve Boozier told the Commercial Review –
“We did our due diligence. After we heard the whole story from coach Bomholt and from their AD (Tom Scroggins), along with several letters of support from people in that community — including players in the program — we felt good.
“He felt it was time for him to make a move and we took it as our gain.”
