(9-30-20) 2020 has been the year of the pandemic, but for girl golfers in Mercer County it will be a season to remember.

With the regular season in the books and the sectionals just completed you can see why this year will be one to remember.

Coldwater had two firsts this year…winning the Midwest Athletic Conference (MAC) title and a sectional trophy. Coldwater won the MAC tournament last weekend outdistancing Versailles by 22 strokes.

The Cavs are led by All-MAC selections Jordan Hemmelgsarn, Lexi Wright and Gracie Buschur (who shot an 84 in the MAC tournament).

On Tuesday the Cavs won the Northwest District D II Tournament held at the Celina Lynx, Laney Finke had a team best score of 83, 2nd best score of the day. The Cavs finished with a new school record of 358, outdistancing the old school record by 14 strokes

Coldwater is the most consistent of any team, with lots of depth and balance, as you can see in the scores posted in both the MAC Tournament and Sectionals.

St. Henry has the top individual in the county, hands down, in Ellen Naumann…this year she repeated as the MAC Player of the year. She was the medalist at yesterday’s sectional shooting a 71, 13 strokes ahead of the runner-up and led the Redskins to a 2nd place finish and advancing to Districts.

St. Henry has participated in the State Tournament for the last three years, #4 is now in site.

Ft. Recovery will advance to Districts for the first time in school history finishing 3rd yesterday at Sectionals. The Indians were led by Jalyn Bruns who shot an 84 and finished 3rd as an individual.

Bruns has been a key part of Ft. Recovery’s success this season, a MAC 1st teamer, she was the runner-up to Naumann for Player of the Year honors. Shelby Stammen was also a MAC 1st team pick for the Indians.

All three teams will now move on the the Districts next Monday at Sycamore Springs Golf Course in Arlington.

District Obstacle

The three Mercer County teams face a challenge in the District match.

Yesterday LCC won their sectional with a 303 team score, 39 shots ahead of runner-up Van Buren and 88 shots in front of third-place Fairview. LCC had the top four individual scores…tournament medalist Mary Kelly Mulcahy had a 69, Erin Mulcahy (77), Bridget Mulcahy (77) and an 80 by Carlie VanMeter.

LCC has won the past two D II State titles.
