(10-19-20) 16 teams remaining in D-I, 32 teams remaining in each of the divisions, II thru VII.Before we begin, I must point out that the Projection Index assumes that every scheduled game will be played. Given the numbers of cancellations because of the pandemic, I understand that is an unrealistic assumption. However, the alternative is putting odds on school districts producing numerous positive cases, which is something that is outside the scope of these odds.
In D-I, Region 1, St. Edward was a 14-point favorite over Medina this past weekend. The Bees erased a 24-14 deficit to pull off the most visible upset of the playoffs so far. Medina heads back on the road for the regional semis, where they will be 5-point underdogs against St. Ignatius.
The lower half of the Region 5 bracket in D-II is be chock-full of talent with the prize being a likely regional final against Hoban in two weeks. Austintown-Fitch and Hudson are slight favorites over Warren G. Harding and Riverside this coming weekend.
With 32 teams left in D-III, it is a coin flip as to who will win the state title between Chardon and the other 31 teams combined. Despite ranked 4th in the Projection Index, SVSM will be a slight underdog at Canfield in the regional quarterfinals. And locally, St. Marys will be a 20-point underdog at Bellbrook on Friday.
Let’s stay local as we talk about D-IV. Van Wert is one of the heaviest road favorites this weekend, favored by 11 at Keystone. A pair of upsets in the lower half of Region 14 have made Shelby the strong favorite to come out of that region where they are co-favorites to win state with Region 16’s Clinton-Massie and Indian Hill.
The two area teams left in D-V, Region 14’s O-G and Region 16’s Versailles, are both favored at home on Saturday against West Salem Northwestern and CHCA. However, looking ahead, which is unadvisable, regional semifinal games featuring O-G vs. Otsego and Versailles vs. Roger Bacon could be must-see tv!
To the surprise of many, we actually have a MAC team who is a early round playoff underdog and is NOT playing another MAC team. After knocking off Allen East on the road, Minster will be a 15-point underdog at Adena this Saturday. The only other MAC underdog this weekend is Fort Recovery who gets D-VI state favorite Coldwater.
Speaking of MAC underdogs, St. Henry is a 10-point underdog at New Bremen this weekend. Both teams are 5-2 with their only losses coming to undefeated Marion Local and undefeated Coldwater. Speaking of Marion Local, they are a 47-point favorite against New Miami in the regional quarterfinals.
