(11-17-20) It has been a dream season for Van Wert football this season…this Sunday they will play for a D IV State Championship.
The cost of success for the Cougars has been quite costly thanks to COVID 19 and the OHSAA not reimbursing teams for their expenses during the playoffs. Playoff tickets this year were $12, but all of that goes to the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) this season. The ticket income is helping to keep the association operating after the impact of cancelling winter and spring championships. A successful team this year, like Van Wert, will have additional financial burdens for six playoff games and no financial help for their success.
The Van Wert Booster Club and the community are hoping to help with the expenses that are mounting up and have started a Go Fund Me account. As of this posting they have already raised $3,425 with a goal of $10,000.
Due to Covid regulations, the Athletic department has not made the money off of football tickets like it has in the past limiting funds for general operations. The Van Wert Athletic Boosters supports the Athletic department with expenses not covered by the current budget. If you would like to donate to the expenses for our STATE FOOTBALL TEAM traveling to the State championship game, you may do it here. Any money not used will go into our general fund to support ALL the teams at Van Wert!!! Let’s Go Cougars!!! #cougarpride
With the current orders and curfew put in place by the Governor this week the future looks a little bleak for any of this to change. How long will schools be able to continue with athletics if this continues for the rest of this year. Add with current budget cuts impacting Ohio school districts it will force changes in how they operate. Each community may have to step in and help provide for the expenses facing their athletic programs, besides paying taxes.
2020 has not been kind to Ohio high school sports, let’s hope 2021 gives us a change in the right direction.
