(11-23-20) Western Boone is where Kent Poole, who played ‘Merle Webb’ in “Hoosiers’, went to high school and led the Stars to an all class state basketball championship runner-up finish. Don’t be surprised if your hear this a lot –

Let’s win this game for all the small schools that never had a chance to get here.

This game has a little bit of a ‘Hoosiers’ feel to it during the year of the pandemic… Western Boone will be looking to win their third consecutive 2A State Championship on Friday morning when they face Ft. Wayne Bishop Luers who finished the regular season 3-6.

In 2018 the Stars won their first title beating Eastbrook 34-20 and in a 2019 rematch they beat Eastbrook 44-7.

Bishop Luers is no stranger to playing in State Championships, they are 11-4 in title games. All of their titles came in 2A and the last time they won and appeared in title game was 2012.

It has been one of the strangest years in Indiana high school football during the pandemic of 2020. The 2A title game might be one of the strangest, Bishop Luers entered the tournament 3-6, while Western Boone was just above .500 with a 5-4 record. A combined 8-10 regular season record…but they have both run a string of impressive wins in the tournament.

Against ranked teams…

Bishop Luers has knocked off four of the top 10 ranked teams during their run, #3, #4, #6 and #7, they also play in the very competitive Summit Athletic Conference (SAC) against schools like Homestead and Carroll.

The Stars beat #8 Heritage Christian during their run, in the regular season they lost to (#5 in 3A) Danville (28-14), who is hoping to win the 3A title game this weekend.

Neither team was ranked in the final Top 10 polls, yep it is 2020.

Bishop Luers is led by Carson Clark (QB, Jr), one of the many talented QBs coming out of the SAC… he is 225 of 370 in passing for 3,289 yards and 35 TDs.

How good are QBs in the SAC? Clark was just an Honorable Mention selection in 2020.

His favorite target is Brody Glenn who has 59 catches for 1,093 yards and 15 TDs. On the ground the Knights depend on Sir Hale with 111 carries and 804 yards and 8 TDs.
