COLUMBUS, Ohio (4-24-21) – Ohio State ‘s Seth Lonsway (Celina) shut down Penn State with seven strong innings on the mound and the offense scored plenty for the second consecutive game as Ohio State took game two from Penn State, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at Bill Davis Stadium. The Buckeyes won the opener on Friday, 11-6.
Lonsway limited Penn State to just three hits while striking out six and walking three to improve his record to 2-4 this season. He allowed the first two batters of the game to reach base, but got out of the inning and then cruised for the next six innings.
The Buckeyes, who have won seven consecutive games at home and eight of 10 this year at Bill Davis Stadium, are now 15-12 on the season while Penn State drops to 8-18.
The Buckeyes jumped on Penn State starter Conor Larkin (2-5) for three runs in the first. Mitchell Okuley walked, advanced to third on a single by Zach Dezenzo and scored on Kade Kern’s single to center for his team-leading 21st RBI of the season.
Then with one down, Brent Todys’ sacrifice fly scored Dezenzo and Kern later scored on a wild pitch.
Ohio State increased the lead to 4-0 in the fifth. Nick Irwin tripled for the second consecutive game and scored on a sac fly by Okuley.
The lead grew to 6-0 in the sixth with doubles from Todys and Marcus Ernst. Tody’s hit scored Kern, who led the way offensively with two hits, three runs scored and an RBI. Todys had a pair of RBI.
Four walks in the eighth led to Ohio State’s seventh run.
Will Pfenning was solid for the Buckeyes out of the bullpen. He came in to start the eighth and faced the minimum number of batters in his two innings of work.
