(11-5-21) Last night New Knoxville (24-2) played in the Ohio D IV Regional Volleyball Semifinal game beating Leipsic (23-3) 25-20, 25-17, 25-11. With the win the Rangers on Saturday will play Tiffin Calvert in the Regional finals and a chance to play for the D IV Ohio State title in Dayton the following weekend.

This week has been a draining and emotional roller coaster for the Rangers:

  • (Last) Saturday New Knoxville beat MAC Champion New Bremen for the District title
  • Monday morning, just 2 days after the big win, a tragic auto accident in Celina claimed the life of New Knoxville Coach Meg Lageman’s husband Ryan
  • Thursday night, just 3 days after the accident, the Rangers are in the Regional semifinal playing Leipsic
  • Friday visitation at Faith Alliance Church from 4-8pm
  • Saturday morning at 10am the community will celebrate Ryan’s life at his funeral in New Bremen
  • Saturday afternoon at 4pm the Rangers will play Calvert for the Regional title

New Knoxville assistant coach Jenny Fledderjohann told the Lima News after the game-

“We just tried to focus on telling them that they were stronger than they could imagine – and to have fun and live in the moment. That’s all we can do right now; and I think they really did that tonight.”

How an Iowa volleyball team overcame a Tragedy

It is something that no one should have to go thru…but there will be life lessons for the players and something they will always remember. Overcoming tragedy is something that the New Knoxville community is working to find.

Several years ago an 18 year old senior setter, Caroline Found, for Iowa West (Iowa) HS lost her life during the season in a scooter accident. The loss of her life led to a book, The Miracle Season, being written by her coach Kathy Bresnahan. Later the book led to a movie starring Danika Yarosh and Helen Hunt that showed how the team and community moved forward. Iowa West would go on to win the Iowa State title.

The Miracle Season

Caroline “Line” Found is the star volleyball player on the Iowa City West High School Volleyball Team and well-loved by members of the community. With Line as the captain, the Trojans have been undefeated and everyone in the city has high hopes for West to win the championship again after the previous year, especially against their long-time rival, City High. During a party at her house, Line decides to secretly sneak away to visit her mother Ellyn at the hospital, where she is being treated for cancer. That night, Line herself is killed in a moped accident, leaving the entire community in mourning.

This movie will move you….
