(1-10-22) The Springfield Catholic Central at Springfield High School boys basketball game ended suddenly Saturday night after an altercation and a separate incident between fans outside of the building.
The incident started with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter, two Springfield players and a Catholic Central player dove after a ball, causing a pile up on the floor. Punches were thrown, both benches to cleared. Fans and coaches also ran onto the court to help break up the fight. Multiple players were ejected.
The Springfield City School District and Catholic Central administrations issued a joint statement –
The competitive nature of the game led to a brief altercation when two athletes attempted to secure a loose ball.
After both coaches restored player order and the identified adult fans were removed from the building, it was determined best for all to stop play at the end of the third quarter.
While this incident was unfortunate, the Wildcat and Fighting Irish teams will continue to support each other and look forward to friendly competition in seasons to come.
The OHSAA is aware of the situation, but no details of possible suspensions have been discussed.
