(4-8-22) On September 4th 2004 in front of 24,987 people at Seattle, Washington’s Qwest Field … (Concord, Calif.) De La Salle High School lost to Bellevue (Wash.) 39-20 and that ended the Spartans’ record winning streak a 151 games.

Senior J.R. Hasty, Washington Player of the Year, led the Wolverines, rushing for 271 yards and scoring four touchdowns. Bellevue also got a 37-yard touchdown run by 14 year old sophomore quarterback Eric Block in his first high school start.

Bellevue would end the 2004 season with a 13-0 record, including a 31-28 victory over 14th-ranked Ferndale in the Class 3A state-championship game in front of 6,994 fans. They ended the season with 23 consecutive wins.

After the win Bellevue Coach Butch Goncharoff told www.seattlepi.com

“This is a great feeling. We’ve worked eight months for this. I don’t think we were intimidated coming in and our kids executed,. We’ve said the strength of this team is our offensive line and it was tonight. They spent more time, more hours than anybody. Even De La Salle.”

Bellevue didn’t attempt a pass the entire game but rushed 54 times for 463 yards.

Start of the Streak

The Spartans streak started in 1991 after their last loss came in the California North Coast Section championship game to Pittsburg 35-27 on Dec. 7, 1991, the seniors on the 2004 team were in kindergarten.

After that loss to Pittsburg to end the 1991 season…the start of the 1992 season started with a 35-21 win over Merced…and the start of the 151 game streak.

De La Salle, still remembers that loss, beating Pittsburg 42-14 for the 32nd consecutive time in 2021 since that loss in 1991.

Their average victory during the 12-season undefeated streak was by 38.2 points, and 43 of their 151 wins were shutouts. De La Salle.

During the streak the Spartans broke the nation’s previous longest winning streak at 72 games in 1997, win #73 was a 56-0 win over College Park. In 1995 the Spartans beat James Logan 41-8 for win #48.

De La Salle suffered its second straight loss in 2004 after the 151 game streak ended, a 30-12 to Clovis West in a home game.

De La Salle’s recent winning streak against Northern California opponents began in 1992. The streak ended in 2021 with a 31-28 loss to Mountain View (Calif.) St. Francis, Before that loss De La Salle had posted a 316-0-2 record against teams from the region.

Spartan coach Bob Ladouceur retired from coaching after 34 years with a career record of 399-25-3…with a .938 winning percentage is a national record among coaches with 200 or more wins. He won five Open Division state championships (4 straight) and 28 North Coast Section titles (21 straight)
