(4-9-22) In March of 2021 a public survey of more than 1,700 respondents found 79% of the community wanted to keep the ‘Redmen’ mascot. Bucyrus City Schools Superintendent Matt Chrispin, a Celina graduate, said that the school mascot is a source of pride at Bucyrus and in similar small Ohio communities.

“I went to Celina Senior High School and they were the Bulldogs. I suppose if PETA or somebody were trying to change it, I would feel a little weird about it,”

According to the National Congress of American Indians Ohio still has the most Native American mascots, the most of any state, according to the group’s national database.

In the stateline area numerous schools have Native American mascots, including Redskins, Chieftains, Braves and Indians. In the past area schools have declined the notion that they need to change them in the future.

The last Ohio high school to change its mascot was Cuyahoga Heights on August 25th, 2021, from Redskins to Red Wolves.
