(5-4-22) The Wapakoneta Board of Education has approved the hiring, of Marcie Alberts as their new girls basketball coach. Alberts replaces Rusty Allen who stepped down after 14 seasons.

Alberts has had a five star career in girls basketball,

She was inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame on May 21, 2016 at the 11th Annual Ceremony in Columbus.

In high school as a 5’5 guard she had 279, second most in the state, during four years (1989-93) at Wooster High School where she was a two-time All-Ohio selection and the Division I Player of the Year in 1993. A four-year starter, Alberts averaged 18.2 points as a junior and 20.8 and was Wooster’s career scoring leader with 1,696 points. Wooster had a 92-7 record during her career.

In college she was a four-year letterwinner and team captain at The Ohio State University, Alberts was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection in 1997. During the 1996-97 season, Alberts led the Big Ten in 3-point field goals made and set at the time a conference record for 3-point attempts in a season. As a sophomore, Alberts led the Big Ten in 3-point shooting percentage. She set a then school record in 1996-97 for 3-pointers in a season with 86, and stills holds the record for the most 3-pointers by a senior as well as free throw percentage by a senior. Alberts left Ohio State second in 3-pointers made, 3-point attempts and free throw percentage, fourth in 3-point percentage and ninth in assists.

Alberts spent the 1999-2001 seasons serving as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Toledo, where the Rockets won the Mid-American Conference Tournament in 2001 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

She also played professionally during the 1997 WNBA season with the Cleveland Rockers as an undrafted free agent.

Her coaching career included being the head coach of Orrville High School’s girls basketball team, she would take over as the women’s head basketball coach at Heidelberg College. In 2013 she became head girls basketball coach at Mount Vernon. After that season Alberts joined the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball coaching staff as an assistant coach Purdue-Ft.Wayne. Last season she was an assistant coach at St Francis U. in Ft Wayne.
