(3-13-23) The Midwest Athletic Conference (MAC) continues a long dry-spell of not sending a team to the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s (OHSAA) boys basketball state tournament.

On Saturday it looked like Marion Local would break that streak in the regional final at Bowling Green against Crestview but in the final seconds, what many considered a controversial call, the Flyers season would end and the streak would continue.

WOSN TV two angles of the call that led to the end of the Flyers season—.

Marion Local Head Coach Kurt Goettemoeller at the post game interviews said –

“I’m going to do the right thing and say we needed to do a better job prior to that to not be in that situation. This is a bitter pill to swallow, there’s no question about it…you come this close to the state tournament and things didn’t go our way at the end and it’s a very, very difficult loss.”

MAC Boys Basketball State Tournament Timeline….

The last MAC team to win a state title was in 2018 when Marion Local beat Cornerstone Christian in two overtimes 52-51.

The last trip to state by a MAC team was in 2019 when St. Henry lost in the State Semifinal game to Berlin Hiland 57-50. Hiland would lose to Crestview in the State Final game.

In 2020 the OHSAA stopped tournament play a week short of the State Finals due to the pandemic. An unfortunate turn of events for Parkway who was due to play Columbus Grove in the Regional Final…none of those 8 teams that were denied a State Final trip have been honored for their accomplishments from the OHSAA.
