Springfield News Leader story – Glendale QB Kylan Mabins granted preliminary injunction, regains football eligibility
Mabins, who was a starter at quarterback as a sophomore and junior at Kickapoo, transferred to Glendale in March (2023) of his junior year citing hardship reasons.
MSHSAA deemed him ineligible because of what was perceived to be for athletic reasons and “undue influence” because of a prior relationship he had with Glendale and the members of its football coaching staff.
Mabins was eligible immediately to play in the Week 5 game against Bolivar, his first game this season.
Springfield Public Schools spokesperson Stephen Hall released the following statement after the judgement of the situation:
“Springfield Public Schools respectfully disagrees with the court’s decision today and we anticipate that it will be appealed. The district continues to deny the allegations of inappropriate conduct contained in the plaintiff’s petition and remains confident that our staff have, at all times, acted appropriately, lawfully and consistent with the athletic processes required by Board of Education policies and the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA). Those processes and policies are designed to ensure that all students are treated fairly. Finally, the district is troubled by the future implications of the decision, which in our opinion, will have a negative impact on the ability of schools and MSHSAA to enforce the policies that govern high school athletics and activities statewide.”
Glendale and former Kenton (Ohio) coach Mike Mauk was released by the Springfield schools just before the season, followed by Mabins being deemed ineligible.
