(10-18-24) Last Friday night Youngstown Cardinal Mooney head football coach Carl Pelini was allegedly attacked by the father of one of the members of the football team following the game.
A police report that was filed last Friday with the Youngstown Police Department that said Cardinal Mooney Head Coach Carl Pelini was in his office after the Cardinals had lost to Warren Harding 20-6 when the player’s father entered the coaches office and allegedly “sucker punched” Pelini in the face.
Pelini had exchanged words with the player over concerns about a fight on the field during the game.
The player’s father “barged through the doors and asked who had been giving [his son] a hard time.” Pelini told officers he told the player’s father that he had words with his son, which was followed by the alleged punching of the coach.
The police report said Pelini had blood on his face near his left cheek and chin and that Pelini may have broken some ribs during the incident.
The other coaches who witnessed the attack told police officers that Pelini fell to the floor and the player’s father was on top of the coach, continuing to strike him. The coaches intervened, and at that point, the man left.
The report said that the player who had words with Pelini was present during the fight and it was alleged that he was physically involved.
No updates on charges being filed since the initial report was filed. No names have been been released of the father or the son during the incident.
Mooney is scheduled to play Youngstown East tonight.
On July 27, 2020, Pelini was named Athletic Director for Advancement/Head Football Coach at his alma mater, Cardinal Mooney High School. Pelini has also been a head coach at the D I level including being the Head Coach at Florida Atlantic and also the interim head coach at Bowling Green in 2018 and numerous other stops during his career.
