(5-5-26) It seems that Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Executive Director Doug Ute has forgotten that he is working for member schools and not for what he wants or likes.

This time he is telling the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association (OHSBCA) that (his) board is not ready to pass the use of a shot clock. Really? It is no surprise that he controls the board. Just check out the board minutes since he has been in charge…every item at every board meeting passes unanimously…including those that he recommends to them to pass.

Just to prove a point…Ute expanded (doubled) the number of football teams in a region that qualified from 8 to 16 teams. This despite the football coaches had not recommended that. So the coaches found help from some political figures to get that changed to a more manageable number of 12 teams qualifying in a region.

Ute also got the board to approve adding additional divisions in football, basketball and volleyball from 4 to 7 divisions. Many think that has watered down the tournaments. This also was done without member schools being allowed to vote on this or any of the items.

Plus he incorporated charging schools a yearly fee for each sport they competed in. Raised ticket prices for tournament games…state politicians also stepped in to help with that.

So if member schools continue to be complacent on items like this…you will be working for Ute for a long time…you are getting what you paid for.

INDIANA

Did you know that on Monday Indiana’s Board of Directors voted 17-1 to not allow the shot clock.

It seems that IHSAA Commissioner Paul Nedig and Ute might be related.

By the way Indiana does not seed teams in state tournaments…they use ping-pong balls.
