CHICAGO (10-30-26) — Quincy Senior High School made a 300-mile trip to Chicago on Friday, and the Blue Devils brought the points with them — all 88 of them, in a game that needed two fields to finish.

No. 9 seed Quincy beat No. 8 seed Chicago Goode STEM Academy 88-84 in an IHSA Class 6A first-round playoff game Friday afternoon, Oct. 30, in a shootout that set an IHSA record for combined scoring.

The 172 combined points are the most ever in a single IHSA game, besting the previous record of 166 set Oct. 29, 2021, when Springfield beat Rock Island 94-72, according to IHSA records. Quincy’s 88 points are the second-most by one team in an IHSA playoff game, behind only Peoria High’s 96 in a 96-40 win over Decatur Eisenhower.

Goode led the entire first half and took a 60-59 lead into halftime. Quincy took its first lead of the game on the opening drive of the second half — and never gave it back.

Then came the ending nobody expected. With 3:42 still on the clock, Goode’s Aedan Cleveland broke free for a 45-yard touchdown run that cut Quincy’s lead to 88-84. But the game could not finish where it started: Goode’s field has no lights, and darkness was closing in on a 3 p.m. CT kickoff.

So, with 3:42 left and the outcome still in doubt, the game was moved — teams, officials and all — to a lighted field at Englewood Academy, about 15 to 20 minutes away. After a stoppage of nearly 30 minutes, the final 3:42 was played out there. Neither team scored again, and Quincy’s 88-84 win stood as the final.

Quincy quarterback Bryson Little was the engine of the Blue Devils’ night, throwing for 656 yards with 11 total touchdowns — nine passing and two rushing — unofficially, according to Muddy River Sports’ Matt Schuckman.

Quincy (7-3 entering the game) had opened the postseason with a 41-7 win over Thornton Fractional South on Oct. 23. Goode (6-2), which earned an opening-round bye as a top-eight seed in Class 6A, averaged 40.9 points per game during the regular

Quincy advances to the second round to face the winner of No. 1 seed Chicago Kennedy and No. 16 seed United Township.
