(2-13-18) – Buckland has not had a high school since the 1960’s, but they do still retain a part of a record in Ohio High School boys basketball history, they played in the lowest scoring game in history of the state.
It happened on December 23rd, 1939 when New Knoxville, a power in that era, hung on to beat Buckland 2-0. The chances of tying that record or breaking it (1-0) seem very improbable in this age of the 3 point FG.
Not many times will you see a school highlight a loss to a county rival, but the 1940 Buckland yearbook did just that.
‘The game was recognized as a great rarity by nearly every sports writer and sports announcer in the United States. This game will undoubtedly be remembered and discussed in many years to come.”
They were right, here we are in 2018 discussing that game. After looking for details of the game the above is all that could be found. No box score, no newspaper recap, but you can be sure that in the day it was discussed over and over.
Six games later the Rangers adjusted their offense and beat the Bucks 42-28.
Buckland, like many small schools over the years, closed and consolidated with larger schools, the Buckland school district is now a part of the Wapakoneta district (the grade school closed in 2005).
New Knoxville, one of the smallest schools in Ohio, is still open and has had a lot of athletic success of the years in the Midwest Athletic Conference. The Rangers won their first ever state championship in any sport when the boys basketball team beat Worthington Christian 74-52 on March 15, 2008 to cap off a perfect season.
