(5-7-18) Purcell Marian and Roger Bacon football have accepted invitations to join the Miami Valley Conference as associate members starting in the 2019-20 school year, the schools will again play football this fall in the GCL Co-Ed.
The schools will continue to be members of the Greater Catholic League Co-Ed Central Division for all of the other athletic programs.
Roger Bacon Athletic Director Steve Rossi
“While we will always be extremely proud of being a part of the GCL, we are excited about the future and all of the opportunities it holds.”
(4-19-18) High School Athletic Conference expansion has had a very busy 2018-19 school year. Lots of twists and turns that are constantly taking place.
- MVC members: Cincinnati Country Day, Cincinnati Christian, Cincinnati College Prep (Associate Football Member), Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, Dayton Christian School (Associate Football Member), Lockland, Miami Valley Christian, North College Hill, Norwood, New Miami, Seven Hills, St. Bernard-Elmwood Place, Summit Country Day and Clark Montessori
The Miami Valley Conference met today to consider adding two GCL Coed memebers, Roger Bacon and Purcell Marian, the final result of the meeting was a ‘curve ball’ for both schools.
The two schools want to leave the GCL Coed because of travel and competitiveness issues, football being the main problem. The other members of the conference are Hamilton Badin, McNicholas, Middletown Fenwick, Chaminade Julienne, Carroll and Alter.
Seven Hills athletic director Brian Phelps, the MVC president told the Journal-News after the meeting:
“We were unable to come to any kind of conclusion to add Purcell and Roger Bacon as full members at this time. I have reached out to both schools to gauge their interest in considering being associate members for football only starting in the 2019-20 school year.”
Last season the MVC had two six-school divisions in football, including two football associate members – Dayton Christian and Cincinnati College Prep. So adding two more associate members would be in line with current conference policy.
In the mean time, while the MVC was considering adding the two schools to their conference, another meeting was taking place in Hamilton of athletic directors and football coaches from both the GCL Coed and the (Columbus) Central Catholic League (Hartley, Ready, Watterson, St. Charles and DeSales) to discuss the possibility of a football alliance that could also include Purcell Marian and Roger Bacon, depending on what the schools decide.
The two schools now have two viable options for football, but will that ease their other concerns. Time will tell….conference turmoil continues to happen in Ohio.
