Grant Besser

(5-19-18) It was a record breaking day for South Adams Pitcher Grant Besser who entered the Indiana HS Baseball Record Book.

The Junior pitcher threw a complete game no-hitter with a school record 21 strike outs in a 9-1 win over Northeastern in the first game of the double-header. The Indiana Baseball Coaches’ Record book shows that Besser’s 21 K’s tie Rich Stanton for 4th all time in Indiana history and was the most in a game since 2005.

Besser is having a season to remember for the state ranked Starfires, both with his bat and his pitching.

South Adams Head Baseball Coach Brad Buskingham:

Today Grant threw a gem! He cruised the order through 3 frames with 9 strikeouts and then labored a little in the 4th but regained his composer. There was actually 1 batted ball which was a pop out to 1st but Grant also struck a batter out where the ball got away from the catcher. He was dialed in once again on the mound – just as he’s been all year. Today this outing allowed Grant to beat the school career strikeout record of 269 which he passed in the 2nd inning of this start against Northeastern. He now has 97 strikeouts on the season in 48 innings of work giving up just 4 earned runs thus far with an ERA of 0.579.

In addition, at the plate he had a single, double, and home run to help himself on the mound. Grant is hitting 0.494 with 15 doubles and 6 home runs on the season.

The Starfires also won today’s 2nd game of the double-header with Northeastern and is now 24-2 on the season. Monday they are at DeKalb before they start sectional play against county rival Adams Central in their sectional opener on Thursday.
