(6-2-18) – South Range picks up a 3-2 win over Coldwater to win the OHSAA D III Baseball title. It was dream season for sure, playing the season as an independent and entering the the tournament with a below .500 record (11-15), a 28 year old coach and beating one of the most respected baseball programs in Ohio, the Coldwater Cavaliers…it is a season to remember.
Sam Brooks and Brandon Youngs stopped the Coldwater offense and held the Cavs to just 4 hits on the day. Brooks went 5 innings, giving up 2 runs, 3 hits, walked 2 and struck out 4, while the Raiders stopper Youngs pitched the last two inning giving up just one hit.
On offense South Range had 8 hits, Jared Bajerski had 2 hits and an RBI,but his RBI in the top of the 6th inning on a SAC fly to score Jaxon Anderson from third base is what turned out to be the game winning run.
Ben Rivera had two hits and RBI and Jake Gehring had the other RBI, also on a SAC fly. The Raiders added 3 steals, Bajerski had two of them.
The play of the game was likely in the bottom of the 4th inning when Coldwater scored the runs and took a 2-1 lead, that is when RF Jaxon Anderson stretched out to catch a fly ball hit by PH Noah Miller, had it gone by Anderson Coldwater’s Frilling, who was on second, would have easily scored and the inning would have continued.
Coldwater’s Cole Frilling pitched a complete game giving up 3 runs on 8 hits, 7 strikeouts and walked two and hit 3 batters in the loss.
Seth Miller had the RBI for the Cavs, will Jake Wenning, Nathan Grunden, Cole Frilling and Brad Giere all had hits for Coldwater.
A very well played game, with a fairy tale ending for South Range.
