#1 Andrean Baseball

(6-3-18) #1 Andrean will be up next for unranked Jay County in this Saturday’s IHSAA 3A Baseball Semistate game in Kokomo. The Patriots are the only Stateline area team remaining in the IHSAA baseball tournament.

Andrean yesterday won the 3A Griffith Regional title knocking off Griffith 11-1 in 5 innings in the semifinal game and followed that up by beating last year’s 3A State champion South Bend St. Joseph 2-1 in the championship game. Vanderbilt recruit Mike Doolin went 6 1/3 innings allowing just 1 hit, walking five and striking out 11. Andrean’s Joe Rycerz hit a home run for the 59’ers.

The Regional title was the 13th for Andrean.  Andrean has won 11 sectional titles in the single-class tournament and grabbed a 4A title last year. All five of its state championships have been in 3A. The last two years the 59’ers have been in 4A via the success factor, returning to 3A this season.

Playing a strong out-of-state schedule this season Andrean played eight schools from nearby Illinois and traveled to Tennessee for a tournament to start the season.

Andrean key players (stats before Regional play)

  • Mike Doolin (8-1, 0.45 ERA, 96 SO; 31 RBIs) commited to Vanderbilt

With three 59’ers committed to play D I baseball, the top player on the team is Mike Doolin who is headed to Vanderbilt.

“He is literally, without a doubt, the most coveted player I’ve coached.”

Jay County Baseball Regional Champions
Jay County Baseball 2018 Regional Champions

Jay County enters the semistate final four as the only team not ranked in the final Indiana High School Coaches Baseball Association 3A state baseball poll.

The Patriots, who have 10 Seniors on their roster,  knocked off #8 NorthWood in the Bellmont regional semifinal game  on Saturday 10-5, scoring 9 of their 10 runs in the 6th and 7th inning.

In the night cap, in a wild and crazy Championship game, the Patriots hung on to pick up its first Regional title in 25 years beating Yorktown 7-6. A key play in the game came in the sixth inning, with two outs and the bases loaded for Yorktown, with Gehrig Smalstig hitting had a full count on him, but Ryan Schlechty was up to the critical situation and would catch him looking at strike three to end the inning.

Max Moser, the only hitter in the game with multiple hits, led the Patriots with three hits on the day.

Pitching was a problem for both teams as each team’s starting pitchers lasted just one inning, Jay County ended up using four pitchers to pick up the win.

Veteran Jay County Head Coach Lea Selvey told the Star Press after the win:

“This has been kind of a special group. I can remember when they were in camp, just little kids. They were competitive. And they don’t seem to get rattled or phased too much. Heaven knows we could’ve got rattled in the first two innings. They believe in themselves.”
