(9-26-18) A unique situation has changed some classifications on a couple of sports for Youngstown.
On Tuesday, the OHSAA dropped Youngstown East in football from D II to D IV and they are also looking at possibly dropping the East volleyball team from D I.
The return of an athletic program at Youngstown Chaney this season, after having been shut down over six years ago, made the change possible. The OHSAA’s Tim Stried told the Youngstown Indicator that East’s enrollment will no longer include Chaney due to the school returning as an OHSAA member school. The loss of enrollment is the reasoning for the drop in class, in the past Chaney’s enrollment was included in the East totals. Chaney students were competing on East teams during the past six seasons. They are now required to play at Chaney, per the OHSAA.
The change in class for East, will also change the football computer points earned by Fitch and Boardman, who both have wins over the Golden Bears.
No comment from those involved why this change did not take place before the start of the school year.
