Szymczak’s Roughriders beat Celina at the Fieldhouse in February 62-48, it had been 14 years since St. Marys had picked up a win on the other side of the lake. The win turned out to be Szymczak’s final win as the Roughriders Head Coach.
Szymczak took over in St. Marys in the summer of 2015 after leaving, Hugoton Kansas after three seasons as the boys head basketball coach. During those three seasons coaching in Kansas, Hugoton went from 3 wins to 11 wins and 14 in his last season. His record was 28-35, but over the last two seasons he was 25-17. It had been ten years since the Eagles had a winning season in basketball and Szymczak led his team to winning seasons in back to back years.
