(5-14-20) In 1964 Celina Immaculate Conception would see the Spartans take a trip to Columbus to play in the Class A State Championship game. IC would make it to the Class ‘A’ final game losing to Dresden 71-61. But what a year it was!
Talk to any high school basketball fan from Celina and they will always mention IC and their State run in 1964. Little did anyone know that just eight years later IC would play their last game ever in 1972, as the high school would close and students would move over to Celina High.

IC’s only regular season loss was to Parkway 72-66 late in the season, but the Spartans would use that as motivation for the rest of the season.
A look at the road to Columbus for IC…

Regionals (story from Mercer County Chronicle)

The first time IC played Parkway during the regular season they beat the Panthers by 30 points 87-57
Glandorf’s loss to IC was the last game ever played by the Dragons, the next school year they consolidated with Ottawa
In 1965 the Spartans were ranked #1 in the Class A Polls, leading late in the game but couldn’t hang on to beat Ottoville in the District

Bob and I enjoyed reading all the old sports stories about the IC team we both loved dearly back in the 60’s. My husband, now 90, was the young and talented basketball coach , and I taught at IC. We had 3 of our 4 children when we spent 3 years in Celina. Many good memories of that “Kerry Myers” era. Wonderful people!
