(10-31-20) Today in Terre Haute, Indiana the IHSAA crowned an unlikely State Cross Country Champion, Izaiah Steury (Jr) of Angola. His story is one that film makers could turn into a great sports film.

Four years ago, the running he did was to chase sheep and goats in the highlands of East Africa. He threw rocks at hyenas to protect livestock belonging to his family.

He was a shepherd at  age 5.

He grew up in a mud hut without electricity or telephone. He shared a bed with a goat, and in the morning he had to clean off the goat pellets.

Today he finished in 1st place in the IHSAA State Cross Country Championships, in Indiana that is quite impressive…since every school in the state competes in one class.

Steury outdistanced runner-up Highland’s Lucas Guerra by almost 11 seconds, 15:23.7 to 15:34.4.

The meet was won by Columbus North who outscored Carmel 63-112, Angola did not qualify as a team.
