(11-19-20) This is it! 6 OHSAAFootball State Championship will be earned this weekend in Massillon as the high school football season comes to an early pre-Thanksgiving end.
In D-II, Massillon practically has home field advantage against Hoban, who has been the top ranked team in the state most of the season. The Knights have been truly dominant since a Week 3 scare against Benedictine. But leave it to the state championship for them to fall a true test.
In D-III, Chardon has been the heavy favorite since early in the season and that ain’t changing now. As a 16-point favorite, the Hilltoppers are the second heaviest favorite going into this weekend.
In D-IV, the Van Wert Cougars are looking for their first ever state championship in football as they face Lake Catholic who hasn’t won a state title since 2001. Van Wert is a slight favorite, but it’s not the most balanced game in Massillon this weekend.
In D-V, I’ve been saying all year that it would be Ironton and Kirtland. And well, lo and behold. Kirtland heads in as a 6-point favorite, the slimmest of spreads this weekend. That said, both of these teams could be competitive in D-III if they wanted to.
In D-VI, Coldwater heads in as a 10-point favorite over New Middletown Springfield. If the Tigers can find an answer for the Cavs’ turbo powered offense, this game could get good and be an instant classic.
Finally, in D-VII, New Bremen is one win away from one of the best Cinderella stories in recent memory. At 18 points, this is projected to be the most one-sided championship game this weekend. Though, a win by the JFK Eagles would be the biggest upset in these playoffs.
