(2-25-21) Sometimes something very special happens in high school sports…even after an injury and in the midst of a pandemic. Last night was one of those nights in Dixon, Illinois during a girls basketball game.
NOTE: Thanks to Sam Ramirez for Tweeting this special moment
The Dixon girls basketball team helped make the game a very special one for Stillman Valley Senior Georgia Ballard. Her career looked to have ended with an injury that prevented her from playing with the Cardinals this season. Add to the situation when the Illinois Governor put high school sports on hold that almost wiped out the entire basketball season, but luckily the season was allowed to start and play a shortened season.
Scoring a 1,000 career points is a big deal at any level, Ballard looked like her career would end six points short of making that happen. But last night Dixon, on their home court, decided to make is possible for Ballard to reach her dream. To start the game a Dixon player would inbound the ball to Ballard underneath her own basket and would shoot three different times to reach the 1,000th point. It was a special moment for Ballard, her coaches, teammates and the Dixon players.
Stillman Valley would return the favor and allow Dixon to score six points and the game would continue. In the end Stillman Valley would come back late in the 4th quarter to win 51-50…but on the night there was no losers and everybody was a winner.
