Vota

(4-28-21) Thanks to the pandemic cancelling last season’s entire baseball season…it would make Niles baseball coach Mike Vota wait until this week to pick up career win #400.

13 was not unlucky for Vota….the 400th win came on Tuesday in the second game of a double-header with Brandywine 13-3. The Vikings win, also 13-3, over the Bobcats in the first game allowed for the special win. The Vikings are currently10-1.

After the win Vota told the Niles Daily Star

“There have been a lot of great players through the years. I think about all the assistant coaches that I have had that helped make this possible.”

Vota is a well respected coach among his peers, in a 2016 South Bend Tribune article, two coaches commented on his coaching –

River Valley coach Jerry Hinman

“Mike is extremely knowledgeable about baseball, but also very personable. He handles the team well, keeping them loose, but getting the players to play hard.”

Berrien Springs coach John Donley

“I’ve always thought his kids played hard for him. Whether they have great talent or it’s a down cycle, his kids always played hard. The players like him and they respect him.”
