(3-12-24) Last week it was New Jersey where the referees decided who won and who lost after a dramatic buzzer-beater…it happened again in Texas as well.
The referees in the New Home-Lipan Texas 2A State Semifinal (overtime ) game overturned what appeared to be the game winning buzzer beater for New Home…the shot was disallowed after a video review. But to many the call was controversial. Unlike the New Jersey game…the Texas game had video review of the shot and a buzzer-beater backboard with the red light.
In the end the officials decided the ending of the game…but still many believe it was the wrong call. The red light and buzzer went off after the shot was released…in the background the clock showed .03 seconds still left, that was what was left in the game before the final play.
Question of the day…why did the red-light on the backboard and buzzer go off and the clock didn’t move after the shot?
Will the UIL release a report from the officials? Why were the red light and buzzer not considered to determine if the shot was good.
New Home coach Koby Abney
“The explanation I was given is they went to the monitor, they put a clock on the monitor. Apparently they disregard the red light that’s on the scoreboard at that point. They put a timer on the play and they basically watch it as if the scorer’s table and the scoreboard and the giant lights and everything that we use for the entire rest of the game does not exist. And in the estimation of that, it happened, the shot happened, after .3 seconds.”

New Home did what they had to do to win…but they go home with a season ending loss one game before the state title game. Heartbreaking ending for the Leopards.
On Saturday night….Lipan defeated Shelbyville for the UIL Class 2A state championship….making it the second state title won in the US this year where the team who actually lost a game before the title game wins a state title.
