You never want your kid to be the one.

The one your community has to pray fervently for. The one everyone is worried about. But last night, our son Parker was badly injured during his football game.

While trying to recover a fumble, Parker collided with another player and his neck snapped backward. He immediately could not move or feel touch on his body. He could not move on the field, on the way to the hospital, or for some time after we arrived at Coldwater.

And we were all praying.

Our family was praying. Our friends were praying. Our entire community was praying.

And then, little by little, things began to happen.

Parker started feeling tingling and burning in his arms and hands. He began moving his arms a little. Then he moved a toe. He began feeling tingling and burning in his feet. He was able to feel a pinprick over most of his body, although he still cannot feel much normal touch or move his legs or hands really. Just his arms right now. His reflex testing went fairly well, too.

Every one of those things feels huge to us right now, and we are praising God for every single one and praising God for our family, friends, and community and your support and prayers. It means MORE THAN WE CAN SAY IN WORDS.

We have now met with the neurosurgeon and have a little more understanding of what happened. We learned that Parker was born with a congenitally narrow spinal canal, meaning there simply isn’t much extra space or cushion around his spinal cord. When he collided with the other player and his neck was forced backward, his spinal cord was injured.

We are incredibly thankful that there are no broken bones or vertebrae and Parker’s brain is 100% okay. But his spinal cord has been injured, and right now we simply do not know what that will mean for his future.

The neurosurgeon was very honest with us. He has seen people with injuries like Parker’s recover, and he has seen people who do not. He told us that we need to be prepared for the possibility that Parker may not regain everything he has lost — while at the same time remaining hopeful that he could.

Only time will tell.

Those are incredibly difficult words to hear as parents and felt devastating to hear out loud.

But we also know what we have already witnessed since last night. We watched our son go from being unable to move or feel touch on his body to feeling sensations and beginning to make small movements.

So right now, we are choosing hope.

We don’t know what Parker’s recovery will look like. We don’t know how much movement or feeling will return or how quickly. The doctors cannot give us those answers yet.

But we know God is here. And we are going to pray boldly for complete healing while taking this one moment at a time.

Please join us in praying specifically for Parker’s spinal cord to heal, for movement and feeling to return throughout his entire body, for the burning and pain to subside, and for strength physically, mentally and emotionally as he faces whatever comes next.

Parker has been talking quite a bit, and one of the things he told us is that even through all of this, he has peace.

And somehow, Gary and I have that peace too.

We are heartbroken. We are scared. There are so many unknowns right now. But underneath all of that is a peace that I really cannot explain other than to say God is with us here, and your prayers are being felt.

Of course, Parker is devastated about football. He has worked so incredibly hard for his senior season, and just keeps saying how much fun last night and how thankful he is for every moment he has already had with “the guys” throughout his football career.

That broke our hearts and made us so proud of him at the same time.

So please keep praying.

Pray big with us.

Pray for healing that exceeds every expectation. Pray for Parker’s spinal cord. Pray for his body to regain movement and feeling. Pray for patience and strength through what may be a long road. And pray that Parker continues to feel the peace that he says he feels right now.

We don’t know what the coming days, weeks or months will bring.

But today we have hope. Today we have progress to be thankful for. And today we are trusting God with the rest.

Thank you to every single person who has prayed, reached out, checked on us, and surrounded Parker and our family with so much love. Your outpouring of love has filled our hearts so much. Thank you. We love you.
