(10-14-26) A 63-0 victory wasn’t enough to save Zach Loboy’s job at Marist Catholic High School in Eugene, Oregon. In fact, it might be the reason he lost it.
The Spartans’ head football coach was removed effective immediately — athletic director Rick Gardner informed parents Oct. 12, three days after Marist’s win over Cottage Grove on Oct. 9, a game that was called at halftime.
Here’s what turned a blowout into a firing: up 56-0 with 1:47 left in the first half, Marist attempted an onside kick — a play teams usually use when they’re trailing. Cottage Grove, with roughly 16 players suited up, recovered, threw an interception, and Marist scored again with under 30 seconds left for 63-0. The second half was never played, on a mutual decision of both ADs and the officials’ commissioner.
Gardner’s explanation:
“What happened there is really not reflective of the school’s mission and how we want to treat our opponents.”
Principal Bob Fraley said a change in leadership was necessary-
“to reflect our school’s mission and values.”
Offensive line coach Jake Lowther is the interim head coach. The Spartans — 2024 Class 4A champs, 3-3 overall, 2-1 in league play — travel to North Bend this Friday, Oct. 16.
