(10-16-26) Every student wearing purple at Beloit Memorial (Wisconsin) High School is carrying a name that one young Beloit teacher suggested nearly 70 years ago.

His name was Fran Fruzen, and his suggestion became part of Beloit’s identity.

Fruzen arrived in Beloit in 1956 as a social studies teacher. Back then, Beloit’s athletes were commonly known simply as “the Purple,” a name associated with three consecutive state basketball championships in the 1930s.

In 1957, Fruzen suggested something new: the Purple Knights. The name was officially adopted in 1958, beginning a tradition that generations of students would proudly carry.

But Fruzen’s connection to Beloit went far beyond a school mascot. He spent 55 years with the School District of Beloit as a teacher, associate principal and administrator. He even retired twice, only to return when the district needed him.

In 1994, he helped establish Beloit Memorial’s Hall of Fame and worked to keep alumni connected to their school. Today, the Fran Fruzen Purple Knight Scholarship honors a graduating senior who demonstrates citizenship, participation and school spirit.

Beloit still honors Fruzen—-
