1992-93 Guilford Boys Basketball
(3-3-17) It was David versus Goliath in the 1993 Class AA Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Boys Basketball Championship Game.
Meet David, Rockford (Illinois) Guilford, led by one of the youngest coaches in the State, Mike Miller (mid 20’s), a team that did not win their conference (NIC 9) losing four games (12-4) and dropping a season ending game to Rockford Boylan (79-68) that would have given them the title. The Vikings were not rated in the final AP Basketball polls.
Meet Goliath, Chicago King, hadn’t lost in over 6o games, Coached by a legend Landon ‘Sonny’ Cox. King was led by two seven-footers (7-0) Rashard Griffith and (7-4) Thomas Hamilton, a team most college coaches could have won with at any level. The Jaguars were considered by many experts to have been the #1 team in the country at the time, they ended the season #1 in the AP Poll in Illinois.
Both teams state tournament runs were completely different, Guilford won their three state tourney games by a combined total of just 17 points. King won their three earlier games by a combined total of 84 points, with the closest being a quarter-final win over Chicago Westinghouse 77-52.
There was not a ‘happy ending’ for the Vikings in the title game, but they gave the Jaguars a run for their money, until the fourth quarter. At the end of the third quarter King held on to a seven-point lead 47-40, in the fourth King would outscore Guilford 32-2 to pick up the win (79-42) and the State title.
It may have not had the ‘Hoosier’ Happy ending, but it was a season to remember for Rockford Guilford. For King, Goliath finally beat David.
