(3-21-18) How did the 2018 OHSAA Boys Basketball State Tournament attendance measure up to last season.

The D IV numbers for the combined semifinal games were just down a tick from last year’s tournament by 181. The Marion Local-Pandora-Gilboa game saved the day with 9,003 in attendance, beating both D IV games totals in 2017. The 1st game of the afternoon was lowest attended game through 2015 with 7,408.

The DIII numbers are below the 2017 DIII semifinal numbers by  5,242 spectators. The Lutheran East-Deer Park game had only 6,606 spectators.

Last season on Thursday night games featured were DIV and DII games, saw the Thursday total drop by 3,948 fans today.

Friday saw good news during the D II semifinal  games, up 2,199 in combine attendance. Both games individually exceeded last year’s two semifinal games that were played on Thursday.

DI semifinal games were a different story, the Pickerington Central-Solon game only drew 7,981 in the final game of the night. DI attendance was behind last year’s two game total by 3,320

The entire day was off 2,499 in total attendance.

The State Finals produced the lowest attendance in the past five years with a total for all four games of just 36,647. The numbers were down 4,223 from 2017 and none of the those games were over 10,000 in attendance.

The DIV game between Marion Local-Cornerstone Christian had the largest crowd of all four finals at 9,620 which was 1,302 higher than last season.

Total loss in attendance for the entire 2018 state tournament game total finished at 7,894.

The highest tournament attendance on record according to the OHSAA web site was in 2003 when total attendance was 198,686, which is a difference from this year’s total of 93,510.

PAST YEARLY TOURNAMENT ATTENDANCE RECAPS

(3-23-17) Keeping an eye on attendance figures for this year’s Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA)  State Boys Basketball Championships.  Note that the first day of the tournaments is seven days later than it was last season.

DII schools played the first two games on Thursday and had 17,403 in attendance, 1,737 less than 2016. The second set of games on Thursday night was the DIV schools and attendance for both of those games was 16,592, 1,059 fewer than last year.

On Friday, numbers were slightly down from last season in DIII, combined attendance for the two games was 18,881, 269 less than last year.DI numbers were down from last year as well, this years total was 22,100, 3,877 less than the 2016 total.

The combined eight semifinal games were down 6,942 from 2016. It might be noted that the NCAA was also playing ‘Sweet 16’ games on both nights.

Saturday’s final games attendance was down from 2016, 8,014 fans less than 2016. The loss for the entire tournament  was 12,848. Two of the four final games were below 9,000 fans.
