(8-19-19) Former Celina (Ohio) football coach Jared Rolfes made his debut as Head Football Coach at Page (Greensboro, NC) one to remember in a 20-14 overtime win over Davie County.
Jared Rolfes told the Winston-Salem Journal:
“I was struggling at the end; I didn’t know how we were going to score twice in the last five minutes, but we did.”
The Pirates were trailing 14-0 with just under five minutes remaining in the game. The key moment in the game came when Page made a fourth-and-2 stop at the Page 39 yard-line and give the Pirates new life and the football.
After the stop with 4:51 remaining in the game, Pirates’ Javondre Paige found Nick Baker for a 58-yard TD and their first score of the night. Moments later Alex Angus would make the key interception and would run it back 37 yards for the tying TD.
In OT Davie County would fail to score on its first opportunity on a missed FG. The Pirates, who had been held in check all night on the ground, would score on a 10 yard TD run by quarterback Javondre Paige and survive the opening game upset.
Quarterback Javondre Paige on the winning OT TD run:
“I saw on film on the sideline the last time we ran that play that the end crashed down, so when we ran it (in OT), I thought he’d do it again, and he did, and I got in,”
Last season the War Eagles beat the Pirates 39-29, one of only two losses in a 14-2 season. Rolfes left Northwest Guilford this past summer to take over the Page program and had a late start with his new team.
