(8-26-17) For both the Western Buckeye League and the Midwest Athletic Conference non-conference football games can mean a lot in helping a school qualify for the post-season.

How important?  The MAC re-arranged their schedules a few years ago to allow each team to have a second week of non-conference games.  The past several years it has been a key for allowing some schools on the fringe to move forward and pick up extra computer points.  This year with the competitive balance plan in place and five of the Mercer County MAC members in the same D VI Region, time will tell if that will help schools move on.

The WBL only has one non-conference game slot open a year, the first week of the season, last night (and Thursday) the conference went 4-6. The under-.500 result will most likely be cause for concern for member schools. The next nine weeks are all conference games, a winning non-conference week helps everyone to make it in to a playoff spot.

The tri-champions from last year, O-G, St. Marys and Wapakoneta all opened the season with losses, while three (Van Wert, Shawne and Bath) of the four teams who opened 2017with a win had a combined win total for 2016 of four.

WBL Non-conference record – 4-6

WINS

  • Elida 42 Tiffin Columbian 20
  • Van Wert 27 Bryan 7
  • Shawnee 27 Delphos Jefferson 6
  • Bath 19 Allen East 9

LOSSES

  • Versailles 36 Celina 7
  • Coldwater 35 Kenton 28
  • Bellefontaine 19 Wapakoneta 7
  • Napoleon 21 Defiance 7 (Thurs)
  • Sidney 39 St. Marys 32
  • Eastwood 39 Ottawa-Glandorf 7

The MAC’s first week of non-conference games was almost perfect, only a Parkway loss to Crestview was the only blemish on the night.

Ft. Recovery, who moved up to D VI this season, picked up a key win for them by beating Lehman Catholic in OT 27-21. An Indian loss could have really been a set-back for a possible play-off spot.  Coldwater’s win, against Kenton their opening game rival from the WBL, has always been a big match-up. With the Cavs moving down to D VI it should help with additional computer points during the season, if the Wildcats can win their share the rest of the way.

Week two of the MAC non-conference games finds nine of the ten teams on the road, only Delphos St. John’s will play at home.
