2016 Celina at St. Marys – WOSN You Tube Video

(10-12-17) Over the years the biggest rivalry game for the Celina Bulldogs (5-2) has been their cross-lake rival St. Marys (6-1). For both teams, it never has mattered what their records were, a win for either team made it a successful season. This Friday night’s game has extra meaning, for the Bulldogs a win over St. Marys would put them in a tie with the Roughriders for a possible WBL Championship, a Roughrider win would clinch them at least a share of the title.  So it is a BIG one for both Grand Lake Rivals.

For Celina, under first year Head Coach Brennen Bader, it started out with a tough loss in a non-league loss to Versailles 36-7. But the Bulldogs have righted their ship and now find themselves in the hunt for a conference championship. Looking back, the Bulldogs were so close to coming into the game on Friday night with no conference losses. The only blemish for Celina in league play this season is a game ending FG loss to Elida 45-43 in the third game of the season. Give Celina credit, at 1-2 they have now won four in a row, including last week’s 34-28 OT win over Wapakoneta.

The Roughriders have won six straight after suffering a season opening 39-32 loss in a non-conference game to Sidney, the Yellow Jackets are 7-0 on the season.

Over the years Celina fans know that any win over St. Marys is a good win, but the Roughriders have handled the green and white since the rivalry began.

Trent Temple in 2013 and 2015 led the Bulldogs to wins over St. Marys, Jared Rolfes had two wins in his five-year stay as Bulldog coach in 2010 and 2012. Celina Coach Brennen Bader, a Celina grad,  understands the importance of the St. Marys game, but the ‘cherry on top of the sundae‘ chance to win a WBL title is an added plus. Celina has won the WBL title only seven times (1995, 94, 83, 68, 65, 51, 1939) since the formation of the WBL. The Bulldogs last title came in the last century in 1995 under Jerry Harris, its been a long-time, 21 years.
