(11-18-17) The Marion Flyers will play the Libery-Benton Eagles in the State Semifinals next Friday and a chance to move on to Canton and play for another D VI title.

The Eagles advance by beating Hillsdale 37-17,  it’s the first time since 2012 that they have qualified for the state semifinals and a chance to make the state final for the first time since 2008. In 2012 they lost to Coldwater 38-0, so the Eagles do know about the Midwest Athletic Conference.

After last night’s win Liberty-Benton Head Coach Tim Nichols told the Daily Record:

“We’ll enjoy this one. It’s been a while and now we are only one game away from Canton. So the stakes are as high as they can get and we’ll see if we can go respond.”

One thing Liberty-Benton will have to do is score, the Flyers have not allowed a score in their three playoff games, beating Ft. Recovery 27-0, Spencerville 35-0 and last night Coldwater 33-0, that’s a 95-0 scoring run.

The Flyers in order to keep that streak going will have to keep an eye on 6’3 Eagles’ QB Austin May, had 259 yards of total offense against Hillsdale as he threw for two touchdowns (completed 9-of-17 passes for 152 yards) and rushed (107 yards) for three more.

Marion Local Head Coach Tim Goodwin told the Lima News after the game about the 33-0 win over Coldwater:

“It’s tough against Coldwater. Things just don’t work as well as they sometimes do (when playing Coldwater). We knew there were going to be spurts, here and there. Our guys kept playing and made some plays when we needed to. And the defense just kept giving us the ball back. That made the offense’s job a lot easier.”

Coldwater Head Football Coach Chip Otten told Press Pro Magazine after the game:

“They were impressive. Offensively, we were up against a team that was just big, and physical, and stout. They’re just a bigger, faster, and stronger team at this point.”

The proof of the statement was in the stats on the ground.  Alex Partington led the way with 13 carries for 75 yards, plus Matt Rethman (59 yards), Nolan Habodasz (53 yards), Jack Buening (38 yards),  Brandon Fleck (30 yards), a group total of 255 yards.

The Flyers currently have the longest consecutive winning streak in Ohio at 25 in a row, win #26 would put them in the State Finals to defend their D VI title.

Last night’s win marked the first time in Flyer history that they have beaten Coldwater twice in the same year.

Game Time: Marion Local vs. Liberty Benton will be played at Wapakoneta on Friday, Nov. 24 at 7:30pm. Marion Local will be the home team.

Kirtland and Nelsonville-York will play in the other D VI State Semifinal
