WOSN You Tube Video – Marion Local vs Kirtland 2015 State Championship Game

(11-25-17) -Marion Local has won 26 consecutive games after losing to Coldwater 17-14  in 2016 , their last playoff loss was in the 2015 D VI State Championship Game to Kirtland 22-20. The two teams will meet again next Saturday in Canton for the D VI State Championship.

Both schools know what the championship game is all about, both have won and lost state finals and both have made numerous trips to the final game…that won’t matter, they both have their eyes set on another BIG OHSAA State Championship trophy.

Kirtland, who will try for their six titles in seven trips, had no problem in their semifinal game win picking up a 44-0 running-clock win over previously undefeated Nelsonville-York. The Hornets dominated as they rushed for 408 yards on 49 carries, 20 first downs and scored on all four of its second-half possessions.

Two Hornet running backs had big nights (Jake Neibecker (19 carries, 154 yards and Joey Torok 13 carries, 141 yards), combining for 295 yards.

In a close game they can count on the leg of Dylan Aquila who kicked a 41-yard field goal.

The Hornets have scored 40 or more points in 10 games this season and have scored 60 or more in two of those wins.

Defensively they have shut-out five of their fourteen opponents, including last night’s semifinal win.

Kirtland has a win over Cuyahoga Heights 42-34 and they will play Minster in the D VII title game.

The Marion Local Flyers beat previously undefeated Liberty Benton 31-13 last night in their state semifinal win thanks to another strong ground game led by (Junior) Nolan Habodasz who had a 144 yards of the 295 total team rushing yards.

QB Nate Bruns was effective with 7 of 16 for 87 yards passing and two TDs, helping the Flyers when needed.

Alex Klosterman kicked a 22-yard FG and in a close game the kickers could be a big part of the outcome.

The win gives the Flyers a chance for their tenth state title in the last 19 seasons under head coach Tim Goodwin.

Goodwin told presspromagazine.com his thoughts on playing Kirtland:

“Yes, but this year they’ll be a whole new group. I think last year would have been a different story, but we remember. Kirtland’s a great program and our guys will be focused on that all week. It’s exciting to go back because every coach wants to take his team to the championship game. And every coach wants to win. We’re not going for anything else. But you can’t get too caught up in certain things. You just keep your nose to the grindstone and do what you do.”
