(2-2-18) Former Van Wert Boys Basketball Coach Dave Froelich is a member of the 2018 Class of the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and will be inducted into the Hall on April 21st.
Coach Froelich answered several questions about his career and what it means to him to be a part of the Hall of Fame:
Games that stand out during your coaching career
There are a lot of games that come to mind and unfortunately most of them are tough losses. That is kind of how coaches are wired. However one big win was in 1999 – 2000 sectional final against OG. We lost to them in the regular season in OT after Ben Ayers hit a shot that if it was a 3, we win. It was right in front of our bench and his toe was just barely on the line and I am staring right at it and it was the right call. We lost in OT. We end up beating them at the buzzer when we throw the Home Run play and our guy tips it and Benny grabs it and lays it in. A great ending for us and kind of karma for Ben.
Thoughts on competing over the years in the Western Buckeye League
The WBL was and is a great league. The teams are in communities that really care about kids and athletics and the coaches are all really good people and good coaches which makes the competition fierce and fun. Every night was a battle and it is quite an accomplishment to win our league. I always appreciated the fact that we worked to beat each other but had an off the court relationship that was one of class and respect, between players and coaches.
Remembering playing in Celina at the Fieldhouse
The Celina Fieldhouse was always a very tough place to play and we didn’t win there very much. The home court advantage starts before you come out of the lockerroom because it is tight, loud with the pep band next to you and either very hot or very cold. Then you play surrounded by fans above you and they are not always “nice” to the visiting team! Add to the fact the Celina was always a very good team, it made for a tough night. A win there felt like you hit the jackpot for one night.
Thoughts on joining the Hall of Fame
I certainly am humbled and honored to be inducted to the OHSBCA HOF. I started off my career trying to learn from those who were in it and also had the good fortune to start my coaching career working for a future HOF coach in Larry Clark. I also played against probably about 12 others who are in and got to know many others throughout my career and my work with the Association. Most importantly, this award is not mine. This is a program award for both Colonel Crawford High School and Van Wert High School that includes all the players and assistant coaches. I will represent all of these people but certainly want to share it with all of them.
