(6-10-18) 2018 will be a year to remember for Jay County Baseball as they made only their second trip ever to a State Semistate game. The Patriots season ended yesterday in Kokomo losing to #1 ranked Andrean 13-2 (5 innings) and one game away from the state title game.

Veteran leader and head coach Lea Selvey told the Star Prsss after the game:

” I’m just proud of our guys. You just celebrate what we ended up doing. We had a good year.”

The thirty year veteran has shown leadership over the year and that he appreciates the efforts of his kids and those nine Senior members to make it a year to remember.

What is overlooked is that the Patriots lost to a very good private school (Five state titles – 2005, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015) that had three Division I signees, had been in 4A the last two years due to Indiana’s success formula (based on two year totals at reclassification time) and could be headed back to 4A after one more season and possibly the next 3A state champion.

In a season where bad weather ruled early in the season the Patriots were the only team in the final four to not be ranked in Indiana, they went 20-8 on the season and  in April they beat Ohio’s D III state runner-up in 9 innings 5-4.

In recent true life movie about a team in Iowa, the Coach before their last game asked:

‘How do you want to be remembered?”

They answered that question in one of the most successful tournament runs at Jay County.

It may hurt right now to have lost this one but Coach Selvey said it best to the Star Press:

“I’m proud of them. They can look back at this at some point and realize what an accomplishment it was for them to get this far.”
