(8-11-18) Anchorage West’s Bubba Mendoza would end Soldotna’s 59 game winning streak on the last play of the game with a one yard quarterback sneak TD run in a 18-13 win.

The loss was Soldotna’s first since the first game of the 2012 season, when the Stars lost 27-7 to Palmer.

Soldotna coach Galen Brantley Jr. told Radio Kenai after the game:

“The streak going away, it was fun to hang on while it was there, but there’s no blame. We win together and we lose together. It just so happens these guys have never lost.”

The Eagles’  Joshua Asi recovered a Stars’ fumble on their own 7 yard line with under 3 minutes left in the game and trailing 13-12, they would drive 93 yards in 10 plays for the record breaking win.

Anchorage West’s Mendoza told the Peninsula Clarion  after the game:

“We preach family. We play for the ‘A’ on the front of our chests, and for us, we treated this like it was just another game.”

And there you have it. We start again. #newbeginnings

Next Friday night in Wisconsin the Kimberly Papermakers will try to build on the nation’s consecutive game winning streak, which is currently at 70. Kimberly will play Fond du Lac. Last season the two teams played twice with Kimberly winning the regular season match-up 35-28 and the playoff game 28-21. In both games the Cardinals came close to ending the streak, it will be a very tough opener for both schools.
