(6-5-19) The Coldwater (25-6) Cavaliers are no strangers to the OHSAA State Baseball Finals, last season they lost in the D III State Finals. This year’s goal is to win another state title for the Cavs and the Midwest Athletic Conference. Winners of six state championships, Coldwater lost to South Range 3-2 in the 2018 D-III state title game a year ago.

Coldwater has a solid pitching staff led by MAC Player of the Year Jacob Wenning (10-2) who pitched 7-plus innings in the Cavs come from behind regional final win over Archbold, Will Broering (1-0, 3 saves) picked up the save. Cole Frilling (8-1, 0.65 ERA) threw a 7-0 shutout win in the regional semifinals over #2 State ranked Fredricktown.
Leading the Cavs offense is Seniors Wenning (.429) and Austin Riethman (.366), juniors Ross Weigel (.377), Miller (.341) and Jake Hemmelgarn (.311).
Standing in Coldwater’s way for the state championship trophy is Roger Bacon, the Cinderella team in D III, who is just happy to be a part of the Final Four. The Spartans entered the tournament at 13-10 and thanks to five straight tournament wins find themselves heading to Canton and a date with the Cavs in the D III Final Four.

This weekend will mark only the fifth state baseball appearance for Roger Bacon (1968, 1944, 1935 and 1932). Roger Bacon’s only state baseball title occurred in 1935 (Class A)…84 years ago.
Leading Roger Bacon…Junior Chris Hoffman, plays third base and in the outfield, was hitting .395 with 11 doubles, one home run and 33 RBI, freshman George Janzen .349, Chris McDaniel .319 and Evan Kelsey .306

Roger Bacon head coach Tim McCoy has many options on the mound, including
junior Tyler Bullock who pitched 6.1 innings for the win over Versailles in the regional final, Hoffmann came in to get the final two outs. Sophomore Evan Webb has pitched 41.1 innings this season with a 4-3 record and 2.20 ERA
Hoffmann leads the Spartans in hitting at .395 while senior Dylan Polk, a Walsh football commit, is at 362 and freshman George Janzen .349 with Mount St. Joseph recruit Chris McDaniel .319 and Evan Kelsey .306.

- Both teams have wins over Versailles, Coldwater in a May 10th MAC game beat the Tigers 6-1, while Roger Bacon handled them in the rgional final 2-0.
