(10-17-20) The Van Wert Cougars swept both the boys and girls Western Buckeye League (WBL) Cross Country Championships today at Elida. But they had to hang on for both wins as the finishes were as close as you can get.

Van Wert picked up the boys title edging 2nd place Shawnee 48-50. The Cougars were led by a 2nd place finish by Hunter Sherer in a time of 16:28.75. Picking up the individual title was Shawnee’s Isaiah Johns in a time of 16:20.78, in 3rd place was Shawnee’s Noah Williams in 16:30.48.

The girls meet was as tight as tight could be….the top 5 runners on both teams, Van Wert and Celina, both had 71 points…the Cougars 6th place runner Kirsten Dunning finished 26th, while the Bulldogs runner finished 45th. It gave Van Wert the title.

Celina’s ‘Dynamic Duo’, Kaylie (18:31.05) and Joscelyn Dameron (19:14.04) finished 1st and 2nd to lead the Bulldogs. Van Wert’s top runner was Kyra Welch (20:25.45) who finished 8th.
