(7-5-21) The 2021 High School football season is just around the corner. This year seems to be going on as scheduled after last year’s ‘helter skelter’ pandemic season. Last season was a nightmare….especially with schedules having to be blown up and put back together deveral times during the season. No computer points and everyone who wanted in to the playoffs made it.

This year one BIG change….computer points are back, plus double the teams qualify for the playoffs, from 8 to 16 teams in each region.

Week 1 for both the Midwest Athletic Conference (MAC) and Western Buckeye League (WBL) are all non-conference games, week 2 sees only the MAC not starting league play.

Week 1 features three MAC-WBL match-ups weth Celina at Versailles, Kenton at Coldwater and Marion Local at Wapakoneta. It is a first time match-up between the Redskins and the Flyers.

New Bremen will go across the state line and play at Marion (Ind). The Giants are a 4A school, there are 6 classes in Indiana.

St. Marys will travel to London, in the past the Roughriders had always played Sidney until they switched leagues.

According to the Delphos St. John’s football record book this is the first time they will play Delphos Jefferson during the regular season in the Saturday night opener. This will be the 2nd time in history they’ve played each other, the first happened in a 2001 Regional playoff game at Lima Senior. The Blue Jays would pick up the win over the Wildcats 38-13.

Food for thought….

Although there has been no public talk from the MAC officials about the increase of playoff schools qualifying. It might be a good time to consider making week 2 a conference game again and replace the non-conference games. The goal was to collect additional computer points with the week 2 non-conference games…it worked. But with 16 schools now qualifying for the playoffs those added points most likely will not be needed. Playing that extra MAC game would help financially, large crowds, more fan interest and cut down on finding a last minute opponent and a long bus trip.
